ELIXIR France with the support of the ELIXIR Hub and the ELIXIR interoperability platform and in collaboration with COST CHARME, the National Bioscience Database Center (NBDC) and the Database Center for Life Science (DBCLS), is organising a BioHackathon in November 2018 in Paris. This BioHackathon will complement and work in collaboration with the BioHackathon planned in Japan at the end of 2018.

The topics of this BioHackathon will go beyond semantics and interoperability, which are typically predominant in the BioHackathons organised in Japan. The priority topics will be defined by ELIXIR platforms (data, tools, compute, interoperability and training), ELIXIR communities (e.g., metabolomics and proteomics), a selection of new tools and communities (e.g., Cytoscape and reproducible networks) proposed by ELIXIR France, and common challenges proposed for the sister BioHackathon organised in Japan.

  • Engage the technical people in the bioinformatics community inside and outside ELIXIR to work together on topics of common interest aligned to ELIXIR activities
  • Strengthen the interactions with ELIXIR Platforms and Communities to establish and reinforce collaborations through hands-on programming activities organised at the event.
  • Advance the development of an open-source infrastructure for data integration to accelerate scientific innovation focusing on technology implementations of FAIR, identifiers, metadata standards, ontologies and metadata catalogues.

Participants are responsible for their own transportation and accommodation. Registration to the event is free and will cover the meals during the time of the meeting. The organising committee have informed the venue (Chateauform Les Berges de Seine) of this event. Participants should make their hotel reservation at this venue.

There will be a minimum of fifteen travel rewards for the invited applicants. The travel rewards will be offered on a case-by-case basis based on the application’s relevance to ELIXIR’s technical activities and strategy.

Process to propose and select hacking topics

ELIXIR platforms, ELIXIR use cases, ELIXIR France, as well as members of the Japanese BioHackathon organising committee are welcomed to put forward hacking topic proposals for the BioHackathon. These proposals should ideally be aligned with existing ELIXIR technical activities. We especially welcome hacking sessions focusing on upcoming ELIXIR deliverables. We have created an online form to collect the proposals. The proposals will be evaluated and selected by the BioHackathon organising committee, with the help of the ELIXIR platform and community coordinators. We will notify applicants shortly after the deadline.
